Castello della Manta

The magnificent ring of the Cottian Alps, dominated by the massif of the Monviso, is the backdrop to this large castle which lies in the immediate vicinity of Saluzzo.

The wonderful late Gothic frescoes which decorate the interior and which make it unique are considered among the most important in Europe.  It is a fascinating medieval fortress, transformed over the centuries into a manor house by the noble Saluzzo family of the Manta, who owned it for more than four hundred years.  The current appearance of the complex is in fact the result of the many extensions and modifications carried out over the centuries by various descendants of the dynasty.  Of particular merit is the adjacent Chiesa di Santa Maria al Castello, of 15th century origin.
