During the Risorgimento, the Castiglia became a penal institution and as such, it went through different eras: the Italian Unity, fascism, the post-war era, and finally its closure in 1992.
Today, the archival heritage of this history has led to a museum where different concepts of imprisonment and criminal politics are linked to the various historical periods.
Through a multimedia installation, the museum presents the historical figures who populated the first modern prison of the Savoyard Reign: famous characters, detainees and officials, dangerous brigands, and poor marginal figures.
Hereby, the visitor immerses in a 360° contemplation of the prison, understanding its multiple ties with art, cinema, and literature as well as its historic significance for modern day democracies.
